Change an Item's Aisle

Every item on your grocery list is filed under a supermarket aisle, so the By aisle view lets you shop section by section instead of criss-crossing the store. If something lands in the wrong place, you can move it — and Cookonut will remember.

How Items Get Sorted

Each ingredient carries the aisle it is usually bought from. Canned tomatoes go to Canned & Jarred, butter to Dairy, Eggs & Fridge, dried apricots to Dry Pantry — even though all three are, botanically speaking, produce or fat.

Cookonut also reads the wording of the line itself. “Frozen peas” goes to Frozen and “peas” to Fresh Produce, because the words tell us which one you’re buying.

Moving an Item to a Different Aisle

1. Go to the List tab
2. Swipe right on the item and tap Edit to open the Edit Item sheet
3. Tap the Aisle row
4. Pick the aisle you want
5. Save

The item moves straight away. (A plain tap on an item checks it off, which is why editing sits behind the swipe.)

Your Choice Is Remembered

This is the part worth knowing: the change is saved against the ingredient, not against that one line on this week’s list.

So if you move olive oil to Dry Pantry because that’s where your shop keeps it, then every future olive oil goes there too — no matter which recipe it came from, and no matter how many weeks later. Other copies already on your lists move at the same time.

Two things follow from that:

• It only applies to your account. Nobody else’s list changes.
• It sticks until you change it again. Move the item back and the old rule is replaced.

Adding Your Own Aisle

Shops differ, and the built-in aisles won’t match every one of them. You can add your own:

1. Swipe right on an item, tap Edit, then tap the Aisle row
2. Scroll to the bottom of the aisle list
3. Type a name for the new aisle and confirm

The new aisle appears alongside the built-in ones and can be used for any item from then on.

Using This With the By Aisle View

Aisle changes only show up in the By aisle view — the other views group by recipe, alphabetically, or by when you added things. See Grocery List Views for how to switch.

If a lot of items in one shop keep landing somewhere unhelpful, it’s usually worth fixing them once: after a few weeks of corrections, the list starts matching the route you actually walk.

Tips

• Fix an item the first time you notice it — the correction pays for itself on every later list
• Items nothing could be said about appear under Uncategorized; these are the best candidates for a quick manual sort
• Custom aisles are yours alone, so name them however your shop is laid out (“Back wall”, “Asian section”)
• Changing an item’s aisle doesn’t affect its quantity, name, or which recipe it belongs to
