What Isn't Added to Your Grocery List

Articles in this section

When you add a recipe to your grocery list, Cookonut leaves out a few things on purpose. A recipe that calls for “2 l boiling water” is correct — but nobody buys boiling water, and a list cluttered with water and salt is harder to shop from.

Nothing is removed from the recipe itself. The full ingredient list stays exactly as imported, so cooking and serving-size scaling still work. The filtering happens only when a grocery list is generated.

Always Left Out: Water and Ice

Tap water and ice never go on the list, in any language:

  • Water, cold water, warm water, boiling water
  • Ice and ice cubes
  • Phrases like “water for boiling the pasta” or “salted water”

Bottled products are not affected — sparkling water, mineral water, coconut water and rose water are real groceries, so they stay on the list.

Pantry Staples

Cookonut also recognises basics that most kitchens keep stocked:

  • Salt and pepper
  • Cooking oil and olive oil
  • Plain flour and sugar
  • Basic vinegar, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda
  • Everyday dried spices — paprika, cinnamon, cumin, oregano, bay leaves

By default these are added to your list, because running out of olive oil is a normal thing to happen. If you would rather keep them off, turn the setting off:

  1. Open More → Personalization
  2. Scroll to Grocery list
  3. Turn off Include pantry staples

Specialty items stay on the list either way — balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, bread flour, sesame oil and saffron are bought on purpose, not kept as staples.

Adding a Skipped Item Back

Skipped ingredients are hidden, never discarded. Whenever you pick ingredients to add:

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the ingredient list
  2. Tap Skipped N items to expand the section
  3. Tick anything you do want to buy this time

Typing an item yourself always works too — the + button on the List tab adds exactly what you type, with no filtering at all.

Something Classified Wrong?

If an ingredient is being skipped when it shouldn’t be, or the other way round, contact support and tell us the ingredient name. Classifications are updated centrally, so a fix reaches everyone without waiting for an app update.
