Convert Units

Articles in this section

Cookonut makes it easy to switch between metric and imperial measurements. Whether a recipe uses cups and you think in grams, or it’s in Celsius and you need Fahrenheit, unit conversion is built right in.

Setting Your Preferred Units

First, tell Cookonut which unit system you prefer:

  1. Go to the More tab
  2. Tap Units & Regional
  3. Under Measurement units, choose Metric (grams, milliliters, Celsius) or US Standard (ounces, cups, Fahrenheit)
  4. Recipes will display in your preferred system

Automatic Conversion

When your preferred units differ from the recipe’s original units, Cookonut automatically converts:

  • Grams to ounces (and vice versa)
  • Milliliters to cups/fluid ounces (and vice versa)
  • Celsius to Fahrenheit (and vice versa)
  • Centimeters to inches (and vice versa)
  • Kilograms to pounds (and vice versa)

You don’t need to do anything — once your preference is set, every recipe displays in your units.

Switching Units From a Recipe

You can also switch systems straight from a recipe:

  1. Open any recipe
  2. Tap the Convert control near the ingredients
  3. Choose metric or US units

Keep in mind this is a single global preference: the system you pick here applies to all your recipes and updates your global units setting, not just the recipe you’re looking at.

Common Conversions

For reference, here are some of the most common conversions Cookonut handles:

Volume:

  • 1 cup = 240 ml
  • 1 tablespoon = 15 ml
  • 1 teaspoon = 5 ml
  • 1 fluid ounce = 30 ml

Weight:

  • 1 ounce = 28g
  • 1 pound = 454g
  • 100g = 3.5 oz

Temperature:

  • 180°C = 350°F
  • 200°C = 400°F
  • 220°C = 425°F

Converting in Cooking Mode

Unit conversion works in cooking mode too. When you’re following a recipe step by step, ingredients display in your preferred units. If a step mentions a temperature, it shows in your preferred scale.

Scaling and Units Together

Unit conversion works seamlessly with serving scaling. If you scale a recipe from 4 to 8 servings and you’re using metric units, all quantities are both doubled and converted. For example:

  • Original: 1 cup flour (serves 4)
  • Scaled and converted: 480 ml flour (serves 8)

When Conversion Doesn’t Apply

Some measurements are universal and don’t need converting:

  • “1 large egg” stays as “1 large egg”
  • “1 clove garlic” stays as “1 clove garlic”
  • “A pinch of salt” stays as “a pinch of salt”

Cookonut is smart about which measurements to convert and which to leave as-is.

Regional Differences

Cookonut supports 8 languages and recognizes regional measurement conventions:

  • US recipes often use cups, tablespoons, and Fahrenheit
  • European recipes typically use grams, milliliters, and Celsius
  • UK recipes may mix metric and imperial
  • Australian recipes use metric with a slightly different cup size (250ml vs. 240ml)

No matter the source, Cookonut normalizes everything to your preferred system.

Changing Units Later

You can change your preferred units anytime from the More tab → Units & RegionalMeasurement units. All recipes in your collection will update to reflect the new preference — no need to re-import or edit anything.
